As society increasingly requires business to address itself to new priorities, the character of the managerial role is changing. Originally the managerial role was substainlly similar to the role of ruler, deriving its powers through rights of monarchy, military control, church rank, or capital ownership. Although modern managers may have some ownership interest in their firms by means of stock options and profit sharing plans, they do not hold their management position on the basis of ownership. The kind of managers we are discussing can be called socially responsive managers. In their decision making they give substailtial weight to social inputs along with economic and technical inputs and they seek to provide social outputs for a wide variety of claimants.
